Summer 2009 Worship Services, East Shore Unitarian Church

Services at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. during the school year, 10 a.m. in the summer.

Sunday, July 5, 2009 10:00 a.m.

Rev. Joan Montagnes

"Creative Love, Our Thanks We Give”

Cathy Perry, who purchased this sermon at the last Service Auction, believes that creativity is the natural order of life.  But wait!  This flies directly in the face of the second law of thermodynamics.  Or does it?  Can the artists and the physicists dance through the cosmos together?

Sunday, July 12, 2009 10:00 a.m.

Rev. Peter J. Luton

"Three in One"

Unitarian minister, political activist and father of modern chemistry Joseph Priestly combined his three passions into an explosively wonderful life.

Sunday, July 19, 2009 10:00 a.m.

Rev. Keith Kron

"The Van Gogh Cafe"

How do we make this world a little fairer, a little more open, a place where we can be whole?  Maybe we need to create our own magic to make this happen.  We’ll explore what magic each of us has to offer the world.  Rev. Kron is the Director of BGLT Concerns for the UUA.

Sunday, July 26, 2009 10:00 a.m.

Rachel Gerberding

"Good Housekeeping"

Why is it that such a mundane task can hold such power over relationships, moods, and even our spirits?  As hard as we try to build castles in the air, we must still put foundations under them.  Today I’ll explore the connection between the practical and the spiritual.  Rachel is a member of the congregation.

Sunday, August 2, 2009 10:00 a.m.

Matthew Lyon

"Meditation and Social Activism: the Path of the Buddhist Warrior"

The practice of meditation in Shambhala Buddhism is far from a passive or self-indulgent escape from the realities of the world.  These teaching emphasize meditation in action.  The idea of the compassionate warrior has evolved from this tradition: the reality that bravery, strength and loving kindness work together to create a more enlightened society.  For 32 years Matthew Lyon has practiced and taught in the Tibetan lineage of Shambhala Buddhism.

Sunday, August 9, 2009 10:00 a.m.

Rev. Barbara ten Hove

"More Than the Sum of Our Wants"

In a radical 2008 film the robot WALL-E helps humanity come to its senses after generations of luxurious meaninglessness.  Our journey, too, can include learning to become ”more than the sum of our wants” particularly if we learn the mantra from the great UU minister Forrest Church.  Rev. Barbara ten Hove is co-minister of the Cedars UU Church on Bainbridge Island and a former Associate minister at East Shore

Sunday, August 16, 2009 10:00 a.m.

Recovery Ministry Team

Addiction of any sort can rob an individual, family or community of its very soul.  Addiction is a disease with biological, psychological, sociological and spiritual effects.  The service passes along the Good News of recovery and offers knowledge, comfort and support from liberal religious folks, like yourself, who walk the path of recovery.

Sunday, August 23, 2009 10:00 a.m.

Rev. Peter J. Luton

"Whose Jesus?"

Even while he lived, people were asking “Who is this Jesus?”  After he died the answers only became murkier.  Different perspectives preferred different ideas about Jesus.  Whose Jesus should we choose?

Sunday, August 30, 2009 10:00 a.m.

The Peace Ministry Team

"Renewing Our Youthful Idealism About Peace"

Many adults have become discouraged and jaded about the possibility of ending violence and conflict at all levels of society.  Our pessimism drains our energy, keeping us from action.  Young people can help us regain our sense of possibility.  Achieving a peaceful and just world may take generations, but unless we embrace the vision, it will never happen.

Sunday, September 6, 2009 10:00 a.m.

Rev. Joan Montagnes

“The Fruits of our Labor”

We work at our lives and often reap great rewards for our efforts.  Sometimes we drink from wells we did not dig.  Other times we plant trees for future generations.  And then there are the times that our labor pays off in ways we never expected.
