Unitarian Universalist Service Committee Sunday

Justice is Flowing

Dr. Charlie Clements

Charlie Clements and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) can both legitimately be called baby boomers.  In his sermon he will trace the moral arc of his life -- from pilot in Vietnam to pacifist physician behind the lines in the civil war in El Salvador to the Nobel peace prize ceremony in 1997 to President/CEO of UUSC -- and that of the UDHR -- from simple collection of thirty article with no force in law to a force that is affecting everyone, everywhere, everyday.  When she mid-wifed it into life in 1948, Eleanor Roosevelt likened it to a 'modern magna carter.'  Charlie will explore why he thinks it has had and is having more impact that any single written document in the modern era.

The Unitarian Universalist Service Committee is a nonsectarian organization that advances human rights and social justice in the United States and around the world. Our programs are based on Unitarian Universalist principles that affirm the worth, dignity, and human rights of every person.  Through a potent combination of advocacy, education, and partnerships with grassroots organizations, UUSC supports programs and policies that promote workers' rights, advance the human right to water, defend civil liberties, and preserve the rights of those affected by humanitarian crises.

Lilacs

Rev. Peter Luton

In Maine often people would take lilacs to the graves of family and friends on Memorial Day.  Lilacs were supposed to bloom around that time.  Many of us have moved away from our ancestral grounds and cannot visit the cemeteries where our roots lay in rest.  And more and more of us choose to have our ashes scattered hither and yon so there isn’t really any place to visit.  Still we can remember and honor the deceased through how we choose to live

“Can I Get A Witness?”

Rev. Joan Montagnes

What does it mean to be a witness of your faith?  This morning we will celebrate a Child Dedication and our Senior Youth’s Bridging Ceremonies.  We will witness rites of passage from one significant stage of life to another.
