ONGOING ADULT PROGRAMS AT-A-GLANCE
COMMUNITY BUILDINGWe are a diverse group. Our ages vary from about 25 to 55. Members are coupled, single, with and without children, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and straight, Eastsiders, Seattleites, male, female, Transgender, democrats, republicans, vegetarians, carnivores, dog lovers, cat lovers, and the terribly allergic. We have a regularly scheduled brunch on the first Sunday of each month. We meet in the North Room (in front of the fireplace) after the second (or only) service and drive to a nearby restaurant. Other activities include game nights, open houses, sporting events, hikes, concerts, birthday dinners, and bake-offs. We also participate in social justice and volunteer activities. We are a group of families at East Shore who have adopted children. There are no “official” meetings, but there are approximately four get-togethers a year. We meet to give our children the opportunity to socialize with other adopted children and for the parents to support each other and discuss topics relating to adoption and parenting. ESUC’s mission is to be a caring, religious community; therefore, we offer Covenant Circles so that people may fully enter the life of the church. A Covenant Circle meets two needs: first, it structures and nurtures caring relationships in a voluntary small-group setting with trained leaders; second, it provides ongoing opportunities for personal growth through exploring life issues in a liberal religious context. Come single or with a partner to enjoy an evening of bridge to have fun and exercise the mind. 'At least a minimalof bridge proficiency necessary'. Reservations appreciated. Meets in North Room. When: Third Saturday of the month, 6:45 PM. Cost: $1 for snacks
The East Shore Men’s Support Group We provide a place for men to explore their feelings, deal with some of the problems that life always manages to throw our way, get support from peers for any issues that we are struggling with, and form strong friendships with other men. New members are welcomed the first Sunday of each month and are requested to get an information package on the group format/purpose from either the Church office or by contacting Joe Germano. The Recovery Ministry team is engaging in an on-going discussion of how we can practice our Unitarian Universalist principles in relation to the challenges of alcoholism and other addictions and the promise of recovery. Whether you are struggling with your own addictive behavior, concerned about the behavior of a relative or friend, or simply interested in learning more about addiction and recovery you are welcome to join us. Join us while we change the world with two sticks and a string. We get together for fellowship, to share knitting knowledge, and to produce hand crafted items for the church mitten tree, the homeless, cancer patients, our loved ones, and ourselves. Occasionally we organize “field trips” to local yarn shops for inspiration and fun. While most of us are knitters, we are not age, gender, skill level, or craft specific. Free knitting advice offered eagerly. Come and visit, and bring your handwork. We will be happy to see you. Meets in E-204. Practice this meditative and supple form of exercise with an ongoing group of sympathetic people. No prior experience needed. Bring a mat or towel for floor work. Meets in Spring Hall. When: Mondays and Thursdays, 9:30 to 11:00 AM Cost: $5 (to be paid at class)
This group is designed to provide a regular social opportunity for adults, over a variety of play boards and card games. Children may also participate if they’re up to some competition. We offer volunteer opportunities to occasionally host the play or provide dessert. Meets in the Library. When: First Saturday of the month, 7:00 to 9:00 PM Cost: None
In the Men's Breakfast Group there are no CEO's, CFO's, officers, corporate attorneys, or accountants. There are no dues and no big shots. We just gather every two weeks at members’ homes to enjoy their selected cuisine. Our goal is good conversation, sharing, and camaraderie. We look forward to seeing you. East Shore Women’s Perspective East Shore Women's Perspective encourages all women to join together for mutual support, personal growth and spiritual enrichment and to use their combined vision and strength to promote human dignity, environmental balance, and world peace. Monthly meetings provide a variety of opportunities to connect, learn, and take action around this year’s theme of “Making Peace a Priority.” Please see Women’s Perspective brochures for detailed program information. Mental illness, developmental and learning disabilities, and other forms of mental dysfunction are an ongoing challenge not only for people with these disabilities but also for their families. If you have a loved one with a mental difficulty, this group can provide much needed understanding and support. Each meeting will begin with a potluck dinner. Meets in North Room. The 4th Wednesday Book Group is a jolly group that meets monthly on the 4th Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Important to the fun of discussing our favorite books are the thoughtful, reflective quality of the interchange, the good humor, and the wit and wisdom of the group. The Great Decisions Group meets once or twice a month to discuss topics concerned with foreign affairs. We use topics and questions for our discussions supplied by the Foreign Policy Association in New York, as do thousands of other Great Decisions Groups in the US. If you are interested in taking, printing, or appreciating photographs as an art form, please join us. All skill levels are welcome. If you enjoy photographs, visit our gallery in the foyer of the church Building. Meets in North Room. When: Last Wednesday of the month, 7:00 to 9:00 PM Cost: None
If you're skeptical about spirits, gods, miracles, prayer, holy books, and mystics, come join the Humanist Books Group to discuss these issues. Humanists believe in science and reason, rather than supernatural mythologies, as the foundation for leading an ethical. Join us in discussing Humanist philosophy, a traditional strand of Unitarian Universalism. We will read all or part of a book before each meeting and come to discuss the ideas with others. We will begin with some recent best-sellers. The reading material for Winter Quarter, will be selected and distributed at a later date. Meets in E-205. Our forums engage people in topics of social justice, community, congregational life, and religious or spiritual inquiry through presentation and vigorous discussion in order to uncover deeper truths. The East Shore Meditation Circle follows a 15+10+15 minute walking meditation in the Buddhist tradition, after which we discuss our meditation experiences and/or listen to a recorded Buddhist talk. Unitarian Universalist Faith Development
This program is offered to new members and visitors, matching established East Shore members with those who want to know more about the church community. This relationship lasts at least one month, unless the participants want a longer or shorter connection. Cost: None
